Background: Sally's parents were instrumental in her sailing career. Following in the footsteps of her brothers, she started sailing a pram at the age of five on Pine Lake in Wisconsin.
Defining Moment: "My senior year in college, we won the nationals in Hawaii. And that launched me into Olympic sailing and professional sailing. It gave me the confidence that I could do this as a career."
Lessons Learned: "The biggest thing I take away from sailing is that I'm a more patient person. Every day you have to be calm and patient on the water to actually achieve what you want."
Advice for Sailors: "When I was about fourteen years old, I won my first big regatta. The day before the last races, my coach and mentor at the time told me to just go with the flow and beat them with boat speed. And it's a really good motto to go by."
Passion for the Sea: "I love the water. I love the movement of it, and the flow of it. And whether it's a lake or an ocean or a bay, I just love the water. I could sit and watch it every day, all day."
Outside Interests: "I like to hang out. I have a big family, so I spend a lot of time with them. We live on a nice lake and so I spend a lot of time water skiing. I also do a lot of skiing in the winter, and lots of other sports."
The Good Life: "The good life for me is sitting on the bow of my boat with my dogs sitting next to me on a beautiful sunny day, and away from it all, with no Blackberry."
